Windermere lies withing the Butler Chain of Lakes which are a clean, beautiful set of interconnected lakes on the southwest side of Orlando. These are used for all kinds of watersports and fishing. Windermere proper is very small and contains an assortment of local businesses downtown, lining the old brick streets. While the town was established over 100 years ago, it has managed to restrict growth like some of the other Orlando-area suburbs. Home to many gated communities, large lots with upscale homes, celebrity pads, and gorgeous lake houses, the greater Windermere area contains between 30,000 and 40,000 residents.
Some of the town's history is preserved by an old single-room school house that is one of the few left in FL. The School House is only a block from Town Square and barely two blocks from Lake Butler. The grounds are open to the public.
In the small town, the local activity tends to happen around Town Square which is a park next to the Windermere Branch Library. Local events, some memorial sites, and the farmers market happen in this park which sits west of Main Street. If you're visiting from another part of town, Lake Butler, Lake Down, and Lake Tibet are three of the largest most popular lakes for your boating and water activities. Plus, the Butler Chain set of lakes are all connected so you can travel between them using canals.
